"Sunlit Day in Old Salem"

I'm enjoying sketching a lot these days.  Sometimes I feel that my drawing skills are getting weak.  I'm still old fashioned enough to want to be able to draw whatever I see before me.  There is never a lack of interesting things to draw/paint/observe/record/interpret/embellish in this world!

"For Sarah"

I have a wonderful coworker and friend, Sarah, who is retiring this month.  Her favorite flower is hydrangea. Wanting to give her something that she might find "special", I decided to create a garden scene featuring hydrangeas.

My study of an hydrangea blossom:

Then I did a value and composition study  for the painting:

Now, my painting and haiku:

Painting from Plein Air Sketches

Here are two plein air sketches that I did in Julian Price Park on the Blue Ridge Parkway. On this lovely morning I drew the first one in a more literal/representational way as a "warming-up" exercise.  Then, responding on an inspirational/intuitive level the second sketch came to life.  Later, back in my studio, I created the painting "Brookside" .
