"Foothills Farmland"

Gently rolling hills, a ploughed field ready for planting, woodsy areas and  a red dirt bank along with a creek barely visible at the left side of the field depicts an imaginary landscape very typical of this area of the country where I grew up.

"Somewhere on the Blue Ridge Parkway"

I think this view was near Grandfather Mountain along the Blue Ridge Parkway.  Painted from a photograph.  I just don't remember the exact location.

"Sky Over Sampson County Farm"

Another typical scene down east in North Carolina where the geography gets flatter as you travel toward the sea.  The morning sky was exceptionally beautiful on this day.

"Midday Sky Looking West"

This Spring has brought all kinds of weather.  Some days are rainy, dark, and cool and others have been warm and bright.  There’s always an interesting sky no matter what the weather.  Cloud formations are endless in their variety of shapes, colors and movements.  Here’s my attempt at a cloud formation that caught my attention:

"Sky on the Fourth of July" (Wilkes County)

In a neighboring county on the way to my niece's house.  Lovely views across the rolling hills of farmland looking  toward the Blue Ridge Mountains.  Painted with a palette knife.

It seems like one can see forever from the top of Jane Bald in the Roan Highlands.  It's spring in this painting with rhododendrons and wild azaleas blooming.

"Cold Windy Marsh" (Fort Fisher, NC)

As I walked through the maritime forest out onto the marsh that lays between the NC state aquarium and the ocean at Fort Fisher the sky was constantly changing with the clouds rushing by.  The relentless winds never rested causing a constant rustling in the forest and marsh grasses.  Wow, it was so cold. I found the colors and textures lovely and wanted to interpret them as best I could.

"Down East, North Carolina" (Summer 2018)

Traveling east in North Carolina, the terrain becomes more flat as you get closer to the Atlantic Coast.  Along the highway one can see many farms with various crops.  This painting is of a field of young soy beans.

"Joyful Day at Lake Junaluska"

Painted from a reference photo.  Longing for bright sunny days because of so much lingering cold and gray skies.  A challenge for me was painting the "skinny little bridge" on such a small canvas!

Here's another small painting that I did back in the summer.  The sky was so interesting this day with bold clouds holding beautiful colors against extreme blue. This is a location near my home that I paint over and over-different times of day, different seasons, sometimes altering my point of reference.

"Blue Ridge Pastures"

The mountain temperatures remained in the low 70's during the morning as I painted.  I had walked a short distance from where I parked my car along the Blue Ridge Parkway and discovered this lovely vista.  I let this "paint itself" as I enjoyed creating in the open air.

"Looking Back"

Here's a painting that I did from the Blue Ridge Parkway looking down into the Piedmont Plateau toward Winston-Salem, NC.  It had rained all day and just before dusk the sun came out lit up the beautiful sky.
