"Wilkes County Farm in July"

I really enjoy driving around in neighboring counties.  The farmland is so beautiful in the rolling hills as you get closer to the mountains going west.  This is a scene from my travels back in July.

"Somewhere on the Blue Ridge Parkway"

I think this view was near Grandfather Mountain along the Blue Ridge Parkway.  Painted from a photograph.  I just don't remember the exact location.

"The Yadkin River in Forsyth County, NC"

The Yadkin River is one of the longest rivers in North Carolina.  It runs through my home county. During  the summer months many people enjoy boating, kyacking, and tubing (riding inflated tire inner tubes) down the river.

"At Asheville Botanical Gardens"

The town of Asheville, NC has a wonderful botanical garden.  In the past I've enjoyed meandering through basking in the beautiful sights, sounds and scents of nature.  Here's a painting of one of my favorite vistas there:

"Grandfather Mountain on a Gray Day"

To me, "soft" days (as the British call overcast, cloudy days) have always had an engaging beauty.  Here's my painting of one of our state's iconic landmarks on such a day:

A place not too far from my home where I love to walk.  The midday shadows and bright light are what attracted me to this scene.

"Red Bloom for a Day"

Hemerocallis (day lilies) come in many colors and bloom times throughout the growing season.  A single bloom lasts for just a day. This one has a lovely gradation from the green center to the red outer areas of the petals.

One day while driving in the country I came upon this scene. It is very typical of farms in this area right at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

"Old Redbud Tree"

This old redbud tree has seen better days.  However it's structure caught my eye with the large negative spaces (spaces between the branches) pointing in one direction toward the base of the tree. It does have character and a little life left in it with the few small leafy branches.  En plein air about two and 1/2 hours.

"Three Roses"

This Spring the weather has been just right for producing an abundance of perfectly beautiful roses.  These were given to me by a neighbor.  The variegated red and white one is a heavily scented variety that filled my studio with that unmistakable "scent of a rose".  From life:

"Midday Sky Looking West"

This Spring has brought all kinds of weather.  Some days are rainy, dark, and cool and others have been warm and bright.  There’s always an interesting sky no matter what the weather.  Cloud formations are endless in their variety of shapes, colors and movements.  Here’s my attempt at a cloud formation that caught my attention:

"Goose from Russell,Quill from Sally"

On a rainy day I set up this still life in my studio.  Painting these very dark value colors in watercolor was a challenge for me.  So much to learn.  The alabaster container on the right is not painted crooked, it is my lousy photography.

"Azalea Study"

One of my college professors said "to study and draw an object is to know it".  Intense looking gives you a lot of information.  Many botanical artist know that and produce beautiful paintings in extremely great detail.  From time to time I enjoy that intense study of something and recording what I see in detail.  Knowing that a camera can do this in a split second does not deter me from seeking the joy that I get when I do studies like this.

"Cherry Tree Outside My Studio Window"

This plein air (I'm calling it that!) painting was done looking out my studio window on a rainy day-then the sun came out!  So I couldn't resist including a bit of cast shadows on some of the limbs. This is exactly what all plein air artist tell themselves to do:  "Avoid chasing the light."  Oh well....

"Spring Morning in Hanes Park"

Another plein air painting.  Still "social distancing" while continuing to enjoy the pleasures of being outside painting close to home. Along the side of a curve in the walk in the park are lilacs, viburnum, and spirea all blooming at the same time.

Plein Air

With the past week bringing such beautiful weather and spring blossoms here to the Piedmont of North Carolina, I enjoyed painting outside.  Staying close to home, I walked to the park in our neighborhood.  I stationed myself a safe distance from people walking by.

The first day I painted this watercolor:

                                         "Yellow Azaleas in Hanes Park
                                           8" x 10"
                                           watercolor

The next day I painted this. A neighbor walking by bought it!  I'll deliver it when it is dry.:

"Outcropping"

Another "found" creation while continuing to let the paint show me what's there.  My imagination takes over as I experiment with the medium.  I wonder into and around the landscape discovering plant life and outcroppings of rocks as the painting develops.

"Below the Dam"

Last Monday was such a beautiful spring-like day.  While visiting C. G. Hill Park here in Forsyth County, NC, I walked down into the woods below the dam and painted this scene.  The two small trees on the right side of the stream projecting out of the bank side by side caught my eye.  Painting time about 2 1/2 hours.
