"Morning at the Creek"

This painting was done from my imagination.  Having spent many hours walking by woodland streams, I have lots of pleasant memories of the peacefulness and beauty of such a place.  My soul is restored in natural settings.

The sunlight streaming down through the trees highlighted the colorful leaves of these trees.  This created a bright spot at this woodland stream.

"Our Patio Garden"

This summer our garden has been a great source of inspiration for me.  It is ever changing with each new day bringing new plants blooming and others fading away.  Also, because of changes in the weather and time of day, the light seems to showcase differing aspects.  My joy is in interpreting these differences.

"October Sunday Morning on the Ararat River"

Cooler temperatures have finally arrived.  It was nice to be back outside painting with a friend this morning.  We sat at the water's edge and looked downstream toward a bend in the river enjoying our plein air event. Later we picnicked at Riverside Park in Mt. Airy.

Standing taller than almost all the other flowers in the garden,  these pink hollyhocks make a joyful statement!  The varying shades of pink delight the eye with some being very bright and others delicate in their tones.

The hydrangeas have been lovely this year.  It's always interesting to watch them change colors from blues to lavenders to pinks and finally to wonderful green tones as they mature through the season.

"Wetland Beauty"

At Reynolda Gardens here in Winston-Salem, what used to be Lake Katherine filled in over the years with silt and run-off from the surrounding landscape and was left to become this wetland.  One of my favorite times to see this area is during the early morning hours as the rising sun casts light across the landscape.

"Hallelujah! Hibiscus"

In my garden, the summer heat brings on brightly colored perennials like this hearty hibiscus.  It gets pruned down to the ground after the first frost in the fall and then in the spring comes back up again with new growth and attention getting color during the summer months.

An abundance of rose campion and butterfly weed in my garden late in the month of May inspired me to create this very impressionist interpretation.  All painted with a palette knife.

It's always a treat to see the new plants that have emerged along the creek banks.  Areas that were bare of any growth during the winter months are now green and lush with many types of foliage. (Painted with a palette knife.)

"Marsh at Surf Watch" (Hilton Head Island, SC)

Every morning I walked on a boardwalk at our hotel to cross this marsh to get out to the ocean. The boardwalk was wide enough for me to set up my easel out of the way of pedestrians.  At times I did have some onlookers.  They were all very respectful of my concentration and those that did speak were very polite and complimentary of my painting.  Some even asked if they could take a photo of me painting!  I guess I was the local entertainment for the day.  The structures on the far distant left of my painting are the cabanas that were placed there by the hotel. The Atlantic Ocean is just on the other side of the distant tree line.

"Broad Creek Marsh" (Hilton Head Island, SC)

There is a lovely new park along the Broad Creek Marsh called "Shelter Cove Community Park".  While walking around the park,  trying to decide where to place my easel, I saw two brown rabbits hopping in and out of tall grasses that grow along the edge of the park. There are more houses along the far edge of the marsh than I painted.  I chose to edit out all but this white one. Spent a little over two hours on this.  It was early morning and the sun was to my back.

"Florid Fungus"

I'm constantly surprised by the beauty that can be found in the woods, especially in the middle of winter.  Highlighted by the sun I can see the subtle colors and patterns on each "fan" of this fungus,  growing on the bark of a tree.  I started this with the intentions of doing a very detailed graphite study.  However, I decided that I simply must render this in color.  So here it is in watercolor a medium that I haven't used recently.

"Mill Creek Beauty"

Afternoon shadows create striped patterns on the woods floor.  As I explore, this one tree in the light says  "look at me!".  The moss growing on the bark is such a bright green that it glows and embellishes the sculptural structure of this natural beauty.  Another day walking along Mill Creek.

"Cold Windy Marsh" (Fort Fisher, NC)

As I walked through the maritime forest out onto the marsh that lays between the NC state aquarium and the ocean at Fort Fisher the sky was constantly changing with the clouds rushing by.  The relentless winds never rested causing a constant rustling in the forest and marsh grasses.  Wow, it was so cold. I found the colors and textures lovely and wanted to interpret them as best I could.

"Hello Helleborus!"

The middle of winter is not a time when we expect to see bright warm hued flowers here in North Carolina.  There is however one plant variety that rewards the eyes with such beauty this time of year.  The helleborus.  Here's my interpretation rendered in oils using the palette knife.

"The Ararat River in Mt. Airy, NC"

Another walk this past fall was along the Ararat River in a small town about an hour north of here.  In the middle of the river there are these large rock formations that, to me, resemble the backs of whales.  Such a strange, interesting and unexpected geological phenomenon.
