"Sims Creek" (in five stages)

Scroll down to see the stages (in reverse order) of my process in creating this painting.  I actually remembered to take pictures! I don't always create a painting in this same manor.
Sims Creek flows through Julian Price Park located on the Blue Ridge Parkway here in North Carolina.

First the completed painting:
                                          30" X 30"
                                          oil on canvas

Just one painting session before the completed painting:

Continuing to develop the lights, darks and local color:

Beginning to lay in the lights/darks and local color:

Laying out the composition in charcoal:

  1. Thanks for the step-by-step. I understand how each painting is created differently but it's still nice to see a process. The final is beautiful and I can feel myself being there. Smelling clean air, listening to birds, and the breeze blowing through the leaves of the trees, and the water moving in the stream.

    1. Thanks, Wendy! I enjoy seeing different processes too. Beside Sims Creek is a great place to have a picnic, relax, read, paint.
Hope all is well with you in your new home.
